No laptop, desktop, typewriter? I can't imagine using anything other than an actual keyboard to type anything longer than a couple of paragraphs, let alone a whole book. No offense, but using an mp3 player or any sort of handheld device sounds like a bad fit for that sort of activity. If it must be portable, even a writing pad and pen/pencil would be a better option than an mp3 player.

I often can't bring myself to use my phone to post here, given how it takes me several times longer to type out even the most basic sentence, let alone linking images and formatting links.

Oh, I do use an actual bluetooth keyboard.

I find it surprisingly comfortable to use. Which is why I was mad when I figured out that the GBoard soft keyboard was interfering when I wasn't even using it.

There's like a whole subculture of these devices and the people who use and make them. Like the BYOK:

I was using a Raspberry Pi Zero running Raspberry OS Lite and a non-thrills word processor called Wordgrinder. I was also using my phone, but I was looking for a solution that meant I could leave my phone at home. Other people have problems with their phone distracting them, but I don't have social media on that thing.

Oh, ok! Had me worried for a sec. You're operating way outside of my depth, as I normally do all my typing on the ol' desktop with Libre Office Writer. A portable setup like that looks very handy, and you're right that a good user interface makes or breaks something like that. I can't give any advice there except to check in with communities centered around those devices and ask what software they use.

In sports news (go sports!), the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup. Last time was two decades ago.

NC is hotter than a coal mine in hell right now and I have to watch National Geographic in order to see real ice, but bizarrely, we have a damn good hockey team. We have a deal with Jamaica: we get hockey, they get bobsledding. :P

So, how is your weekend? This is how mine started:

That's where I live. The house party they mention at the end was right next door.

I pulled into my driveway after work and saw the neighbors were having a party and I was like, Ooooooh. I hope they aren't too noisy. And next thing I knew, the police showed up. Those fuckers linger.

Cops are the same around here. If there is a fender bender, they have to block all lanes except one for like three hours. Then again, that job sucks.

Only in Huntsville. Tornados and rocket engine tests at the same time.

Here in Florida, we had a Bezos rocket go boom on the pad a few weeks ago, but oddly the thing that shook the house more was a pretty strong earthquake off the coast of Cuba. We do get weaker tornados in the Springtime or during hurricanes sometimes, but they are attracted to trailer parks.
