Got his interesting middle name in honor of the Shawnee Chief Tecumseh. His niece, Euthanasia Sherman Meade ironically was an acclaimed medical doctor. The word 'euthanasia' originated from Greek roots meaning a "noble or good death". Mary Shelley used the name "Euthanasia" as an honorable political character's name in her 1823 historical novel "Valperga", thus she got her unusual name. Sherman correctly predicted the American Civil War would be a long, devastating conflict of attrition.

BTW, after the war General Sherman directed the United States Army's military campaigns and forced relocations against Western Native American tribes as Commanding General of the Army from 1869 to 1883. One of the things he did was slaughter Bison, knowing the Natives depended on them. He pretty much invented "total war".
